News Junkie
To track my media use, several tools have been employed. For the internet, the tools used include history trends and history stats. For non online media, I have been updating a spreadsheet daily with the average hours spent in class and other non online activities. The following is an analysis of my media use.
African Centric media
On a quick screenshot, most of the media I consume online has Africa as one of the mentions or is centered around Africa. Does this mean, I do not consume global content? Nay on the contrary, I consume different forms/types of media. I view more American video content which is indeed sad for the Nollywood. Perhaps the other reason could be that African-centric media is not as central on the internet, presenting different challenges.
On a weekly analysis days Wednesday seems to be the busiest day I spend online. This is indeed strange given that Wednesday are usually my busiest. Saturday and Sunday also seem not to have a lot of media consumption.
Having a span of different sites, the site span from social, manifested through face book and twitter. The main reason, I think youtube is also priority on this list simply because I use youtube to catch up with local news. One of the aspects I like from these stats is github.com makes it to the top ten. Could i code more than use social media?
Another interesting aspect is how I get to different links via the internet. The chart below depicts this. It seems I directly access links more than type. Perhaps means I need to do more writing. On the other hand the number of times I reload webpages is not as much.
That transition type graphic is really interesting, Jude. It makes me think about how we don’t necessarily “check” homepages of news sites to see what’s happening but rather click from emails, searches, social media and things that come to us in various ways either push or pull. I’m curious what Youtube videos you watch for daily news – are they channels you subscribe to or do you search for specific things?
